Half-way down...question about fit...

Hi....I've just joined, and am working on my first project from this book (the TTV).    I'm now 3.5 inches down from the armholes, and have some questions to you who have successfully completed this project!

At this point in the pattern (size 36), it calls for me to add another set of ribbing on one side (so that one side is k57 across (not sure if it's the front or the back), and the other is k51 across).  Which side is the front, which is the back?    Are the extra 2 columns of ribbing to help taper under the bust?  Just trying to picture it.

I've been trying on my TTV as I go....and when I tried it on, I'm having a hard time picturing the placement of the extra 2 columns of ribbing, and how that should tailor the fit.

Thanks!

Wow, I was wondering the exact same thing just a couple of days ago!

So, what I figured out is that the extra set of ribbing is to go on the back (if you look carefully at the pics in the book, there is no extra ribbing in the front). Since the pattern is exactly the same in front and back until this point, it probably doesn't matter which one you choose to be the front/back.

You add the ribbing when you come to the side that you want to be the back by adding one (k3, p3) after the regular ribbing, then knitting across the back until there are 6 stitches left until the regular ribbing and knit (p3, k3).

One is supposed to have a stitch marker somewhere in the pattern to tell you where to start doing this, but I forgot to put one in and did what I just described and it looks fine. I hope this helps, and I hope that you can understand my muddled instructions!

I have started the turtle and now I want to add sleeves! HA- ala Elizabeth Zimmerman and the idea of DIY patterning. Alas- I am not so very brave- has anyone done this?

Hi Kelly - I've completed two of these now, and I think the reason they are in there is, as you suspected, to help with the fit, but also (I think) for the overall look of the design. Instead of a harsh switch from side rib to bottom rib, that little extra makes a beautiful transition as you work your way down to the pretty fitted bottom ribbing. Something to ease the fit, plus an added extra to make the overall design look extra fashionable. My opinion, of course. Love the two I have made and can't seem to want to wear anything but! Continued luck with yours, you will love the finished product.

Hi Kelly,
I started this perfect periwinkle also and found I am stuck at the joining round. The instructions don't make sense to me and I assume that the correct way is to follow the ribbing through on the sides, but where does the extra p3, k3 go? It seems strange to start a rib pattern in the middle of the back, but there is no clear picture of the back and the front is stockinette. Help, where should I be on the sweater and what do I do at the NEXT RND: line?
Thank you so much
