I finished the body in the spring, but during the summer it was just "ignored". But for 2 weeks ago I finished it. I really like it, but I am not sure about the gaps above the buttons on each side!

You could always tack the sides down together and sew the buttons on top. That is, if you're not planning to ever leave them open.

I've sewn the upper parts of the side slits, this way you can still open the buttons, but you don't have the weird holes.
