Airy Wrap-Around Lace Sweater

Airy Lace Wrap

Tonight I ran over to Joann's for a pattern and some fabric.  I found this:

Dsc01836

I think it will work for the Airy Lace Wrap I've been wanting to make!  It's Patton's Lacette, in a really pretty lavender color.  It's an acryilc/mohair blend very similar to the suggested yarn I think!. The best part the yarn was on clearance for $1.97!!! So only $8 total for all the yarn!!! Let's hope it works out for this one!

Airy Wrap-Around Lace Sweater Saga

I'm back!  After I finished the first front I put this down and left it for a month.  I picked it back up a week or so ago and finally finished it!  The trouble began when I tried on the "finished" product.

First, let me say that I did NOT use the recommended yarn (Plymouth Softer) because I couldn't find it around here.  Instead, I'm using one strand of laceweight wool that I got for free (the kind that comes on a big cone) and one strand of Imperiale super kid mohair, held together.  So the fabric I made may be a bit fluffier than intended.  Anyway, the 10 feet of knit fabric wrapped around the waist might have looked okay on someone about 25 pounds lighter, but on me it looked, let's say...like ass.  I nicknamed it Spare Tire.

So, I ripped one of the fronts back about 3 feet and knit the edging again.  I ripped the other front back about a foot and knit that edging again, too, because the ends were hanging down past my knees the first time.  I'll explain how it all works in a minute.

So I tried it on again, and this time I found another little problem.  I had to pull the fronts quite snugly to keep them going ACROSS my chest instead of around/under my chest, and as knit fabric tends to, they stretched.  And stretched, and stretched, and pretty soon they were down past my knees again.  So I ripped them both back another foot or so and re-knit the edgings one more time.  And it looks good!  Yay!

I tried to take a picture of the whole thing laid out on the floor so you could see my modifications, but I couldn't get it all in the picture!  Here's my fancy bathroom-mirror shot instead...

P1010014_2 So the left front, which is the one that crosses underneath, does not wrap around my back.  It just goes straight down and ties in the corner.  The right front, which crosses on top, goes all the way around my back and ties.  Total length of the fronts (including the edging) are:  Left - 24 inches, Right - 46 inches.

Phew!  Lots of fiddling, but I'm happy that I took the time because I love it!!!

More Pics - Airy Wrap

Mary asked me to post some additional pictures of the Airy Wrap from the front and back, so here they are:

Because I shortened the body on mine, the cables don't have a lot of room to show because of the width of the wrap. If I were to do this again, somehow I would pick up less stitches and make the ties narrower (maybe one or two less repeats across on the lace pattern. I don't know if that would work for sure though.

Finished Airy Wrap!!

Here it is, at long last!

52707 00652707 009

Yarn: Brooks Farm Primero (mohair)

Size: 33 1/2" - only did ten lace repeats for the ties and it could have been shorter; also eliminated about 12 rows on the length of the body

Me: 5'1", 34.5" bust

Overall, I'm much happier with the end result than I thought I would be! The yarn is super soft, not scratchy, and I think this will look really great with a flowy long skirt. I have a long chocolate brown skirt that I'll try this out with later this week at work (ugh, just the word "work" is enough to get me depressed!!)

Hope everyone's having a great weekend!

Finished!

I just finished my airy wrap-around lace sweater.  What a great knit!  It only took me about a month and a half, and that was with tons of breaks to work on other projects. Details can be found on my blog

I already bought yarn to make the u-neck vest thingy and have a lot more on my to-knit list. This is such a great book!

Finished Airy Wrap

I finished up my airy wrap last week!!

Airy wrap in use

I used 5 skeins of Louisa Harding Kimono Angora in color 05 & size 11 addi turbos.

Airy wrap cable close up

I couldn't be happier with the end result. I love it in the variegated yarn. I think it adds a lot of texture to the piece but still shows the cables well.  I know I'll get a lot of use out of it as an easy pull on over jeans or a cute dress. I also finshed a second two toned ribbed shrug in cotton. Not to much to see there  (I liked my malabrigo version better) but if you are interested you can read about it here.

I'm thinking my next project will be the puff sleeve cardi or maybe the drop stitch lace tank. We'll see!!!

Airy Lacy Wrap is finished!

Here's a few pics of my finished knit.

I'm not sure how much wear I'll get out of it.  I don't really have anything in my wardrobe that goes with it.  If I had to make it over again, I'd knit the fronts shorter.  45" is huge on someone so short.  I've enjoyed seeing everyone else's FO's on this Knit Along.  Happy knitting everyone!  Check out my blog to see my other projects!

The Errata is Your Friend

Ahem. Yes. Well. I've been knitting since I was a wee child, but that didn't prevent me from making an ego-bustingly simple mistake. In short, check the errata available on the lovely Miss Stefanie's site.

The worst part: I did check her errata. And yet I still somehow missed that correction note for "Rows 12-15." Granted, 95% of my knitting is done while on the bus to and from work sans pattern, but I still did a double-take when I reached the very end of the first wrap. When I reached this part, I thought and thought about it, trying my darndest to recall the original pattern instructions.

Wrap_2 And I am pleased to inform that I did recall the instructions word-for-word. But rather than wait and check the errata once I fired up my work computer, I forged ahead full steam. I assumed that the number of decreases (two a row as per the book) was correct and the stitch count (25 as per the book) was too generous. In reality, the decrease should be a grand total of one, making the stitch count noted in the book correct. For the first 12-15 row occurrence, I had a total of 21 stitches (versus 25). This results in a much sharper taper at the end of the wrap thingamajigger. Fortunately, it's not really a blight on my eyes despite being untrue to the pattern.

I've already started on the second wrap, so the plan is to stew this over before I decide if I'm going to rip these few rows and achieve pattern-true perfection, or if I'll simply repeat my mistakes to make this second wrap match. In the end, I think it will all come down to how lazy I'm feeling once I bind off the second wrap.

Airy Wrap Progress

I reknitted the back of the Airy Wrap over the weekend and I like the length a lot better. I took out about 10 rows before the cable section and on the cables I just did two complete repeats of the chart instead of 18 rows from the chart as the directions say, eliminating 2 more rows. I did the same thing on the sleeves, which are also done. This pic is of the right front, which I picked up and have three lace repeats done on. I must say I am starting to like this project again now that I'm on this section as I'm starting to cruise along again, but I think it's going to take a while to get to 45", nonetheless!!

I'm dying to cast on for another Fitted Knits project - wahh. I have my eye on the Coquette Lace Tube top for my next one.  But I know if I do cast on now, I won't finish this one, so I'm going to stay the course. I'm really liking seeing all the great FOs you all are posting!!

First project finished!

My turtleneck was finished yesterday. Maybe it could have been longer....

I have now started on the sleeves on my boatneck, and I am already looking forward to having this finished cause it has gotten rather cold her again...no spring coming anytime soon.

For a while ago I also started some "test-knitting with some lovely angora/merino yarn, and before I knew I was knitting the airy wrap. It is less airy because I am knitting on 5 mm needles and it will be for my 4 year old daughter.
