Holiday is going to be my first lace project (I tried "fit n flare trumpet skirt" in Knitting Lingerie Style, but that's only eyelets, doesn't really count as lace), but I'm already getting weird bumps directly above each cluster of eyelets, where the decreases are. I know that decreasing further will eliminate them, but it'll also interfere with the number of stitches in the area, and stop me from adding the next cluster of eyelets as I work vertically. Do these go away when I steam-block? How do I get rid of them? Also, is this because I'm using two strands of Misti Alpaca worsted yarn, rather than ribbon?
I'll get a pic up here as soon as I find a camera.
I tried to do the Holiday wrap as well and called my local yarn store about it. There is an error in the pattern starting on row 18 to 19. The count is off. I've tried a few things to fix it, but I don't know enough about lace to fix it. I tried to post something about it on Ravelry just yesterday about it. If you find an answer let me know!!

Gah, as yet I have not been invited to Ravelry!

I'm going to forward this page to Annie to see if she has any insights...

Hi,
I'm sorry it's taken me a few days to get to this, it's been a busy and slightly rough week. I just got back from having xrays as it seems my bronchitis is blooming into something that will not be contained by the antibiotics I was given last week.
[I know, too much information... But I wanted to explain why I hadn't been responding as rapidly as usual to pattern questions.]
About the chart - it does work. I just knitted it up (albeit from row 14...) and the change from row 18 to row 19 works out exactly as charted - here, I'll write it up.
Row 17 (RS): K8, YO, k1, YO, k8 (19 sts)
Row 18 (and all WS rows): K3, p to last 3 sts, k3
Row 19 (RS): K3, YO, k1, YO, k4, VDD, k4, YO, k1, YO, k3 (21 sts)
Note: In this last last row (and all subsequent RS rows to row 29), the second and third YO's in the row offset the center VDD. The first and last YO in the row create the extra sts, bringing the total to 21 sts.
Row 21 (RS): K4, YO, k1, YO, k4, VDD, k4, YO, k1, YO, k4 (23 sts)
Row 23 (RS): K5, YO, k1, YO, k4, VDD, k4, YO, k1, YO, k5 (25 sts)
etc...
About the inclination of the fabric to bubble - this will happen when moving from increases to decreases in the same point in the fabric. It will block out nicely - it tends to block out more easily with a ribbon yarn, but use steam when blocking, and block this HARD (as with any lace) to really bring out the beauty of the eyelets!
I hope this helps!
Best,
Annie

Wow, I can't believe I heard back from the author. I am sorry you are seriously under the weather, and I won't be upset if you don't get to my question for a few weeks, but I still am doing something wrong. Row 18 has 19 stitches. Row 19 has 18 stitches that I work when I count up the ones that I actually put my needle through. I count K3 + K1 + K4 + VDD (which is 2) + K4 + K1 + K3 = 18. Is the VDD actually 3 stitches together? I always end up with one extra stitch when I am done with this row. I am not going to practice with that amazing ribbon yarn again until I get this.
Thank you so much! Your book is amazing.

Okay, this is what I have so far. I'm hoping that the pointy parts where I decreased when I block it--- I'm on winter break and staying with a friend, who, though a great host, has no iron. Peh, college kids : )
Weirdly, the points gradually disappeared as I progressed up the length of the shawl, though...? I mean, I'm not complaining, just curious how that happened.
Anyway, I'm about fifty yards away from finishing, and will model it when it's done.

Hey Chris-when you were on the rows that I said are not right with the number of stitches what did you do? Were they right for you? I still get one extra stitch at the end of each row. Let me know, I'm dying to start knitting this up again.
Thanks.
