Blog Fodder

My friend Monica sent me this meme by email, so I thought I would play along, as I have no other blog fodder today. Last night I went to Blu Coral with Jim and Lisa and "was out past my bedtime" so hardly any knitting got done. I did work on the first sleeve on Mirepoix yesterday during the day and have just finished the third increase on it (done from the wrist up.) I was kind of liking the mindless 2x2 ribbing.

Seven MORE Random Things

Romi (a/k/a Ms. Knitty with yet another beautiful pattern in the latest issue which also made the cover) tagged me for the 7 Random Things meme, so now I am accepting the challenge to come up with seven random things that I haven't revealed before. This is kind of fun actually, after having done this one a few times, as I'm sure there are seven more (possibly silly) things I haven't revealed before.

THE RULES:
1. Link to the person that tagged you and post the rules on your blog.
2. Share 7 random and/or weird things about yourself.
3. Tag 7 random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs.
4. Let each person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Random and/or odd things about me:

I've decided that the theme is, "professions I wanted to pursue while growing up", with a few random thoughts that developed from that starting point. No theme is necessary, but I find it fun to use one in coming up with random facts.

1. At one point (freshman year of high school) I wanted to be an artist. In high school, we had to pick a certain number of art and music classes and I picked not only the first art class, in which I got an "A" but the harder core second art class, which was focused on 3-dimensional art. I made a faux Grecian urn and a copper face mask and got a B- in the class - no more art classes for me after that.

2. Sophomore year of high school, I really liked my biology class and suddenly wanted to be a doctor (maybe an opthamalogist??) Then I remembered that I can't stand the sight of blood or guts (or eyeballs) and scratched that idea.

3. Junior year of high school, I toyed with the idea of becoming a psychologist or psychiatrist. My father talked me out of it, saying he didn't think I could deal with "crazy people" all day, that they would upset me too much. He told me stories of his friend who is a psychiatrist at a mental hospital and some of the bizarre incidents that would occur, and between this and the discouragement of multiple years of med school, I decided not to.

4. In 8th grade, I think I wanted to be a hair stylist. Dad talked me out of that one too, telling me I needed to capitalize on my more academic strengths. (After all this discouragement, he also ultimately did encourage me to do what I ended up doing - becoming a CPA and tax professional.)

5. In elementary school, I wanted to be a teacher. (Doesn't every girl?) In 2nd - 4th grade, I was often done with my assignments much earlier than anyone else and was bored. I had at least two different teachers that had me grade other students' classwork. I can hardly believe this now. Wouldn't that be a fireable offense?

6. Before kindergarten, a neighbor boy and I used to have play dates (not those kind of dates...) My mother always told me he was cute and he was going to grow up to be very handsome. He wasn't very popular at school, as he was very smart and "nerdy" so of course, I always said "eeeewwww". He turned out to be very handsome, 6'2 and blond, as well as smart. Didn't our mothers always know who the cute ones were going be?? Back to the play dates with Chris (the neighbor boy). My mother overheard me telling him one day, "Let's play restaurant - YOU be the waitress." My mother found this hilarious, as I said waitress instead of waiter, and directed our respective roles. I can't tell you how many times she told me I was bossy! I guess I am, a little. LOL. It's served me well so far!

7. My first real kiss was also with a neighbor boy, also named Chris, in my new neighborhood that we moved to just before 7th grade. My mother thought he was such a nice harmless boy - and I guess he was - but she should have supervised us a little more closely! LOL.

Wow, that wasn't too hard to come up with.

This time, I'm going to tag Jenny, Adrienne, my SP11 spoiler Helene, my SP11 spoilee Stefanie who just had a recent birthday, Debby, doctorkate (one of the new kids on Ravelry whose blog I love) and Heather. I know some of you all have done this before, but take the challenge to come up with new things so we can get to know you a little better. I did and had a fun time with it!

Tagged!

Sharon tagged me for a fun "8 random things" meme, and so I thought I'd play along. We haven't done any memes over here in awhile. I'll try to come up with 8 truly random things that I haven't revealed before, although that isn't required in the rules. What are the rules, anyway?

Rules:
Once tagged, you must link to the person who tagged you. Then post the rules before your list, and list 8 random things about yourself. At the end of the post, you must tag and link to 8 other people, visit their sites, and leave a comment letting them know they've been tagged.

My rule: I'm going to make this goofy and totally random, but you may get some good product suggestions from it.

1. (Looking around at my desk) - The best nail strengthener is Nailtiques 2. It is expensive for a nail hardener, but this stuff can harden anybody's nails, no matter how paper thin they are. Ask me how I know.

2. (Related to #1) I used to get my nails done religiously every two weeks - the acrylics with the high maintenance fills, etc. I used to get the pink-and-whites where they would fill in the tip section with white acrylic and the main body of the nail with pink acrylic. This was quite labor intensive, and not all the nail techs at the salons knew how or wanted to do it. It took about 1 1/2 hours and it looked great. I would then have them paint over it with a color, so that then when the color would chip after a week or so, I could take off my own nail polish and have a perfect french manicure underneath. HIGH MAINTENANCE. I took off all my nails about four years ago as I got sick of spending my life in nail salons.

3. (Follow-on to #1 and #2 - I feel like Marin with her footnotes) I haven't had even a regular manicure in over a month and a half. From high maintenance to no maintenance. I really need one. I was on a regular schedule of getting them every week or so, but lately, I've just been cutting my nails off as they grow pretty fast. My cuticles are super dry and a train wreck. The Solar Oil almond-scented cuticle oil works best if I would actually put it on.

4. OK, enough with the nails already. Here's a new subject. I am very organized when it comes to anything electronic (files, etc.) but a mess when it comes to actual pieces of paper. Give me a piece of paper, and I am likely to lose it. Send me an email with an attachment, I will never lose it, ever.

5. I am getting disenchanted with participation in KALs. I love setting them up and organizing them, but by the time the actual KAL rolls around, I've often moved on and want to make something else, and it is more of a chore for me to actually make that original project. I'm torn between forcing myself to just make it anyway and just starting the project(s) I want to start. Confession - I'm feeling this way about Mirepoix right now, although I have all of the Louet (pricey yarn, that!! in a million colors) sitting in my closet looking at me. I want to cast on for something else - the Ballet Pullover by Teva Durham (Summer 04 Interweave) in some chunky wool. It's like comfort food in knitting form (chunky wool, in the round, top down).

6. I discovered that I hate repairing other people's knitted garments. This lady at work had these fair isle fingerless gloves that also have a flap that covers the fingers as a mitten. However, on the thumb, they aren't "fingerless"; instead they have a hole where you can get your thumb out to use it. She had ripped through this bound off hole and had another tear between the thumb and the next finger on both gloves. Ugh. The fingers at least weren't multi color - they were all red. To make a long story short, the repair turned out fine and she was very happy with them, but you wouldn't have wanted to watch the process of me repairing these things. It was like making sausage - ya don't want to watch. Next time someone asks me I am going to feign incompetence (which really won't be far from the truth.) However, I had to step in on this one as originally the owner of the gloves asked another lady at work to fix them - who CROCHETS. ONLY. and buys all her yarn at the dollar store - and I could see the train wreck coming down the tracks. Dontcha love how the muggles think knitting = crochet and they're totally interchangeable?

7. Truly random thought, while thinking about my hair appt this morning: my hair used to be one flat color (dark, dark brown, almost black), down to my waist and spiral permed (in the 80s, when else?) I need to dig a picture out to show you. It is weird to look at these pictures; I look like a baby version of my current self in the face, but someone really should have told me to pluck (or wax) my eyebrows. I hadn't discovered eyebrow waxing yet. Even though I definitely look older now, I like my looks better now, maybe because I know who I am and I am comfortable in my own skin now at this age.

8. I try to do my treadmill workout every morning and I know I need to add weight training back in soon because that seems to be the one thing that really keeps your body looking young when you get older, but I am petrified of huge thigh muscles. They develop super easy on me, like in two weeks, so I need to figure out a weight lifting exercise that develops long, lean thigh muscles instead of the bulky quadricep muscles. My mother used to tell me that I got those kind of muscles (the good kind) whenever I was swimming a lot. I have a Bowflex, so I probably should look at the book that came with it (I've always just done their canned "better body workout" from the poster) but any suggestions would be appreciated!

Ok, these were the self-absorbed ramblings of someone who had too much wine last night (but it was an excellent time and well worth it.) I tag Adrienne, Jenny, Marjorie, Monica, KozyKitty, Maryanne, Kasia and Jeanne - and anyone else who wants to play! Heck, if you're reading this, consider yourself tagged!

I saw this on Kristina's blog the other day and thought I'd play along. It reminds me of those "purity questionnaires" (like have you gone to first base? played spin the bottle? kissed another girl? etc.) LOL.
